PERU: Kuczynski Acknowledges Having Advised An Odebrecht Project

(Agencia CMA Latam) - Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the current President of Peru, acknowledged having been an advisor in an Odebrecht project. Kuczynski's acknowledgment comes after he repeatedly denied any link with the Brazilian construction company involved in a corruption scandal in at least 11 countries.

In an interview with local radio station RPP, Kuczynski denied being a partner in an investment fund that allegedly had ties to Odebrecht, but acknowledged that he worked as a financial advisor for several companies that needed private financing for large projects, and especially for an Odebrecht's irrigation project.

"I made a living as I did during my entire professional career, I've been a banker in New York," said the president. "Then, sometimes I was hired, I was hired for H2Olmos, an irrigation project."

H2Olmos SA is owned by Odebrecht. The company was formed in 2009 to build and operate one of Odebrecht's projects in Peru, which required the construction of a 20-kilometer tunnel through the Andes to transport water to desert irrigation fields.

In this regard Kuczynski clarified that he was not a minister when he advised the Brazilian company, "but a private player who makes his living as I have done during my professional career," he said.
