Nyala Mines constructs, rehabilitates school blocks

The Dzonze District Development Fund (DDDF), a $1million (about K730 million) corporate social responsibility (CSR) vehicle of Nyala Mining Limited in Ntcheu, has completed construction of two new school blocks and rehabilitation of two others at Kandoma Primary School.

Speaking in an interview, DDDF vice-chairperson Damison Chikhosi said Kandoma Primary School had insufficient classroom blocks, a development that posed a challenge to quality education.

“We have 984 pupils against two classroom blocks and one teacher’s house that government built. However, they were rundown over the years; the company has constructed two new blocks of two classrooms each and four teachers’ houses,” said Chikhosi, adding that the company also pays salaries for nine auxiliary teachers.

He said pupils were learning in the open and subjected to the elements and government deployed only six teachers to the school.

Kandoma Primary School head teacher Frankson Mpinganjira said the assistance from Nyala Mining Limited has transformed the school.

He said Nyala also sunk a borehole, provides exercise books and acquired land for the school sports complex. n
