Singapore, 22 May 2017- Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) will partner local non-profit, non-governmental organisation Waterways Watch Society (WWS) to jointly host a series of outdoor hands-on programmes for students on the conservation and protection of Singapore's waterways starting this month.

The 'Kallang River is Living and Loved' (KRILL) programme is a year-long education outreach targeted at primary, secondary and tertiary schools. as well as tertiary institutions such as junior colleges, polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITEs). SPH is the first corporate sponsor to support this programme under its SPH Green Fund. It is expected to benefit at least eight schools and 8,000 students.

There are two modules to the programme - a 30-minute assembly talk conducted in the school which covers global water issues and how these issues impact Singapore's waterways; and a two-hour hands-on learning trail session where students take part in outdoor activities at the Kallang Riverside Park to learn about climate change, water pollution and water conservation. The schools can choose to take the modules separately or together.

WWS was established in 1998 by Mr Eugene Heng who is its Founder and Chairman. It aims to promote individual responsibility and shared ownership of our water resources and environment through public outreach and education. It works closely with individuals, schools, community groups, corporates and government agencies such as the Public Utilities Board and the National Environment Agency. WWS was the recipient of the President's Award for the Environment in 2006 and Mr Heng himself won the President's Award for the Environment in 2014.

Mr Eugene Heng, Founder and Chairman of WWS, said: 'WWS is very pleased to welcome SPH as a sponsor of our KRILL programme. The Kallang Riverside is significant as a learning trail site as it is firstly located in the heart of our city, and is part of the catchment area where water flows and thrash from all over Singapore congregate. The programme is therefore a reminder that we are all stakeholders and have an important role to play to keep Singapore a livable, clean and green city. With SPH's support, we will be able to engage and convert more students to be our ambassadors by nurturing their sense of activism and responsibility towards building a sustainable environment that we can all enjoy.'

Ms Ginney Lim, General Counsel and Executive Vice-President, Corporate Communications & CSR, SPH said: 'Water conservation, as well as environmental protection, is key to our survival and well-being. We look forward to working with WWS on this education outreach to share with our students the importance and urgency of preserving our natural water sources. We also hope that the SPH Green Fund can continue to support worthy green causes to help protect Earth's valuable resources.'

This is the second project sponsored by the SPH Green Fund in aid of conservation and environmental projects. In September 2016, it was the first corporate sponsor of the Garden City Fund's Plant-A-Coral programme, a community outreach initiative of the National Parks Board (NParks).
