Singapore, 18 July 2017 - Singtel has won theSpecial Recognition Award and its Group CEO Ms Chua Sock Koong has been named Best CEO for listed companies with a market capitalisation of S$1 billion and above, at the prestigious Singapore Corporate Awards 2017 held this evening.

The Special Recognition Award recognises Singtel's commitment to embracing holistic aspects of diversity to ensure an effective and well-functioning board. Singtel's board diversity policy considers factors such as skills, experience, background, gender and ethnicity - all of which are critical to the global and diverse nature of the Group's business as well as its evolving needs. These factors serve to determine optimum board composition and the desired competencies, to maximise the effectiveness of the Board.

The Singtel Board has a strong commitment to gender diversity which is seen in the female representation on its nine-member board where a third are women. Its board composition also encompasses broad expertise in areas such as technology, finance, legal, as well as cross-border business and management, and diversity in perspectives.

Singtel Chairman Mr Simon Israel said, 'I'd like to thank the Singapore Corporate Awards for recognising our efforts in championing board diversity. We've learned from experience how valuable it is for our Board to have diverse skills, backgrounds, experiences and gender, to better navigate the complex business and technological environment that we're operating in. Discussions are always richer, more robust. Decisions taken are always more balanced. While gender diversity is only one aspect of board diversity, I believe it is an important one. I would encourage all Boards to see gender diversity as a business imperative, for the value that it brings to the Board table.'

The Best CEO is evaluated on areas such as strategic leadership, performance orientation and commitment to corporate governance, talent management and development as well as corporate social responsibility.

'I'm honoured to receive this recognition. We've made good progress in transforming Singtel into a global communications technology company over the past five years. We've strengthened our competitiveness, and we're also more diversified and resilient,' said Ms Chua. 'This is an award for the entire Singtel team for their commitment, passion and tenacity. While we still have much to do, this award is a great encouragement to us to push on in our journey.'

As Group CEO, Ms Chua directs Singtel's global strategy and oversees its consumer, enterprise and digital businesses. With the advent of the digital economy in recent years, she has been driving a Group-wide business transformation from a traditional telco into a communications technology company. This has revamped the Group's core businesses to stay relevant and compete in the new economy and seen compelling growth in new enterprise services such as cyber security. She and her team have also built new digital businesses in areas where Singtel's telecom assets provide a competitive advantage, and these are becoming fresh sources of revenue for the mid to long term.

The Singapore Corporate Awards recognises and honours SGX-listed companies as well as individuals who, through their corporate practices, have helped to raise Singapore's corporate disclosure standards and corporate governance.
