20 July 2017; Lagos, Nigeria: IHS Towers ('IHS'), the largest independent tower operator in Africa, Europe and the Middle East by tower count, has won the 2017 CSR Initiative Award of the Year award at the second annual Africa's Information Technology & Telecom Awards (AITTA). The award was received at the AITTA ceremony at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, Ghana on 15 July 2017.

The AITTA seeks to celebrate success, reward key achievements and raise the profile of the leading players in the African telecommunications sector by honouring corporates that continue to promote excellence throughout the continent.

The judges presented IHS with the award due to its strong Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, which is focused on enabling the growth of its local communities. The strategy is needs-based, tailored to each country's operations and focuses on four pillars including business ethics, people, environment and education.

Over the past year, IHS has launched its Generator Recycling Programme in Cameroon, Nigeria, Rwanda and Zambia which increased power access for over 78 communities and institutions including schools, hospitals and orphanages. The Nigeria team also helped address the internally displaced persons and hunger crisis in northeast Nigeria by sponsoring an empowerment and training initiative for 40 women to manage 15 community food service centres and various local school feeding programmes across Borno State. Presently, the Nigeria team is pioneering the construction of a new community food service centre which is intended as a platform to feed 15,000 people annually.

Akin Naphtal, CEO of InstinctWave, the event organiser, said:

'IHS has demonstrated its leadership in sustaining rapid continuous business growth while strengthening its commitment towards social projects by improving the lives of its local community members. This is not an easy feat given the challenging macroeconomic context and we applaud the team for their efforts.'

Issam Darwish, Executive Vice Chairman and Group CEO of IHS, said:

'The award follows in the wake of one of the strongest years in the history of IHS's CSR programme, which saw the roll out of numerous initiatives in Nigeria to address the ongoing famine crisis. With over 23,300 towers in the portfolio across Africa, we're one of the largest independent tower companies in the world and believe we are a critical enabler to Africa's continued economic growth. We are delighted to receive this award and for the team to be recognised for its hard work and dedication to enabling our local communities to grow.

This award seeks to establish a benchmark for outstanding performance in the industry with a focus on celebrating strong leadership, high quality operations and the rollout of innovative technology.
