Highlights

  • WFP provided food assistance to 195,606 people through nutrition activities and school meals in July.

  • WFP participated in the preparation meeting for the 15th ECOWAS Nutrition Forum planned for 24 to 27 October 2017 in Bissau.

  • Preliminary results of the May Food Security and Nutrition Monitoring System survey were discussed with the Government and NGO partners at meetings held in Bula, Bafatá and Buba.

  • Ten (10) community associations in Cacheu and Canchungo sectors (Cacheu region) were sensitized on home-grown school meals (HGSM) and encouraged to participate.

Operational Updates

  • From 17 to 19 July, WFP, UNICEF, WHO, FAO and West African Health Organization (WAHO) supported the first preparatory meeting of the joint international and local organizing committees for the 15th ECOWAS Nutrition Forum, which is scheduled to be held from 24 to 27 October 2017 and will be hosted by the Government of Guinea-Bissau. In May, the Ministry of Health set up various committees to ensure timely and appropriate organization and preparations of the Forum. WFP participates in the Marketing and Communications Committee. The next preparatory meeting is planned for 16-18 August and will be hosted by WFP.

  • From 18 to 20 July the preliminary results of the May Food Security and Nutrition Monitoring System survey were discussed with the Government and NGO partners at meetings held in Bula, Bafatá and Buba. Some 128 participants attended the meetings (37 in Bafatá, 52 in Bula and 39 in Buba), representing 10 government institutions and 17 non-governmental institutions, including the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS). Once survey results are cleared at Regional Bureau and HQ, WFP and the Ministry of Agriculture will organize a validation workshop in Bissau with all engaged partners.

  • From 18 to 20 July, 10 community associations from Cacheu and Canchungo sectors of Cacheu region were sensitized on home-grown school meals and its opportunities to bring positive impact on their communities.

  • From 26 to 28 July, WFP and the Government General Direction for School Feeding completed a joint monitoring mission to eight villages in Bafatá and Gabu regions. In consultation with local NGOs, the mission planned food assistance for the next school year, and supported monitoring and evaluation exercises associated with the end of the school year.
