Oklahoma drops fifth straight game, continues collapse at home vs Texas

Oklahoma (16-10, 6-8 Big 12) dropped its fifth straight game 77-66 to Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center, and is on the verge of collapsing down the stretch of what looked like a dream season for the Sooners.

Texas dominated the last 10 minutes of the game, keeping Trae Young and Oklahoma at arms length while forcing tough shots and converting easy baskets.

The game turned after Young hit a three-pointer to pull the Sooners within one point near the 13-minute mark. Texas responded with a 12-0 run that was comprised of five layups and two made free throws. After that, Oklahoma never got the deficit to a manageable place again.

Young finished with 26 points on 7-of-21 shooting, but was visibly frustrated for most of the game. He finished 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, but is in the midst of the worst shooting slump of his collegiate career. He's made just 10 of his last 51 three-point attempts.

The three-point shooting duo of Christian James and Brady Manek struggled again vs the Longhorns. The pair combined to shoot just 7-of-26 overall and 3-of-15 from downtown. Without offensive production from the pair, it's tough to see the Sooners getting back on track before March.

Sophomore guard Kam McGusty was a bright spot, scoring nine points on 2-of-5 shooting, but played just 16 minutes. Oklahoma's leading scorer from a season ago is starting to play better, but will need more opportunity to make a significant impact on the Sooners' postseason chances.

Oklahoma has drifted to two games below .500 in conference and is in danger of falling to bubble status ahead of Selection Sunday. The Sooners are surviving off the strength of non-conference wins vs Wichita State, USC, Oregon and Northwestern, as well as victories over Texas Tech and Kansas earlier this season. But a late-season collapse landing Oklahoma in the NIT can't yet be ruled out completely.

Next up for the Sooners? A matchup against Kansas on Monday at Allen Fieldhouse. If Oklahoma loses there, its season could be on the line next weekend at the Lloyd Noble Center vs Kansas State.

Here's some of the reaction to Oklahoma's loss to Texas:
